As a source of animal protein with both nutritional and medicinal value, yellow mealworms far surpass livestock and poultry aquaculture in terms of farmland substitution, feed conversion, water use, energy consumption, carbon emissions, management convenience, investment costs, labor costs, etc. In 2021, the European Food Safety Certification Body confirmed through systematic and comprehensive research that yellow mealworms are safe as food. Subsequently, the European Commission issued implementing regulations approving dried larvae of yellow mealworms to be listed as a new food in the EU.
